This article was from the associated press. The title read, "Obama picks openly gay lawyer for ambassadorship". First of all, why the heck should people care what sexual orientation someone of such high experience, education, and commitment to Ameican government is? Does that make ANY difference in whaat kind of job a person can do for our country. In my my opinion, this article, and gay rights being a legal matter at all, is a waste of time, and I do not care whether or not a leader of our country is gay or straight. I understand gay rights is an issue in America right now and that Obama is working towards eliminating any separtation between gay and straight people.
The only part of this article that meant anytihng to me was at the end- a quote from Obama: "At its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans," Obama said a 2007 statement on gay issues. "It's about whether this nation is going to live up to its founding promise of equality by treating all its citizens with dignity and respect." I completely agree with this and am so amazed that Americans even consider this a big enough issue to cover as important information going on in the world today.

While I agree that the U.S constitution is a living constitution, that does not mean the nation cannot set moral standards. Two man having a relationship as if they're male and female will garner public attention regardless of your opinion on the issue. Yes qualifications matter more than anything but we are also humans and we take other things into consideration also. Some will argue that a Black person with the IQ of Sarah Palin or George Bush will find it hard enough to get a job, but both being White find it easier to be President. Same goes for gays, things that straight people take for granted are rights they continue to fight for, until the society is willing to look past sexual orientation, issue like that will continue to be politically exploited..
ReplyDeleteI agree with both of your statements that sexual orientation should not matter and that people do judge. This may be impossible but why do we even have to know anyone's sexual orientation. No one would have even known he was gay if it weren't for the big deal made about the whole situation. People should be equal and should be hired based on their qualifications not their sexual orientation. I feel as though the light is shining through for the gay community and hopefully soon they will be treated equally.
